ARTIST STATEMENT
I made a four-piece set that illustrates what home and freedom are to my community on the surface. The set showcases a glimpse or moment where my people are allowed a space to experience freedom. I made these pieces as a reminder to what home and freedom may look like on the surface but the banners in the paintings communicate that home and freedom isn't something my community has. The muse for this set also came from my own experiences of freedom throughout my upbringing from childhood to adulthood. These paintings reflect the questions of where home may be and what freedom truly is. Home can look and feel different depending on the age and environment of a person. Whereas freedom changes and evolves as we are exposed to the true meaning of life in America; I intended for these paintings to reflect upon those processes in a positive and uplifting way. Because does anyone really have freedom in America?
DECLARACIÓN
Hice cuatro piezas que ilustran lo que hogar y libertad significan para mi comunidad. La puesta muestra un destello o momento donde mi gente tiene permiso a sentir libertad. Hice estas piezas como un recordatorio de como que hogar y libertad pueden verse por la superficie, pero en realidad las pinturas comunican que hogar y libertad son derechos que mi comunidad no posee. La inspiración para esta puesta artística viene de mis propias experiencias en relación con libertad a través de mi infancia hasta mi adultez. Estas pinturas reflejan las preguntas acerca de lo que significa hogar y de lo que es en realidad la libertad. Un hogar puede verse y sentirse diferente dependiendo la edad y el ambiente que rodea a una persona. Mientras la libertad cambia y evoluciona, entre más nos acercamos al sentido de la vida en Estados Unidos, con estas pinturas deseo reflexionar acerca de este proceso desde un punto positivo y alentador. Porque en realidad, ¿habrá gente que tiene libertad en Estados Unidos?
EXHIBITION REFLECTION
Home in these paintings is depicted as a state of mind, state of being, emotion and perceptions. Fireworks show, riding a friend's bike pegs and daydreaming in nature are what I interpret as home to a nation of people who have been robbed of their true home. The scenes represent the homes that are intellectually created so that one can feel or return to freedom. My project also reflects and illustrates my own memories of what it feels like to be free. I revisited experiences that once gave me a sense of freedom and safety because children aren't safe in the communities of their homes with the current state of our world. My interpretation of freedom has had the privilege to evolve as I grow as an artist. Now, every time I put a paintbrush to canvas or the inspiration for my spoken word came from the knowledge and beliefs that I have on what freedom in America is and who has it.
REFLEXIÓN
De la manera que proyecto hogar en estas pinturas es desde un estado mental y emocional, entre ser y percepciones. Para mi mostrar fuegos artificiales, andar en bicicleta y soñar de la naturaleza, es como hablo del hogar de personas de las cuales muchos fueron arrebatados. Las escenas en mis pinturas representan las casas y espacios donde uno siente que puede regresar a sentir libertad. Mi proyecto refleja e ilustra mis propias memorias de lo que yo siento cuando digo que soy libre. Para esta puesta, recordé experiencias donde sentí libertad y seguridad y más cuando estamos pasando por un momento en el mundo donde hay juventud que no siente esa seguridad en sus comunidades. Mi interpretación de libertad ha tenido el privilegio de evolucionar mientras más me desarrollo como artista. Ahora, cada vez que pintó o hago poesía, para mi viene de mi entendimiento de libertad y de lo quién la tiene en este país.
